Finding Comfort, Confidence & Purpose – June’s Story at Willows

June moved into Willows Care Home in Romford after finding it increasingly difficult to maintain her independence at home.
Gardening has always been a big part of June’s life. She has taken great pride in caring for her plants and creating beautiful outdoor spaces over the years. Since moving into the home, she has been able to continue this passion, enjoying her own window and patio area filled with colourful flowers. With support from her daughter, this has remained a meaningful shared activity.
Faith is also incredibly important to June. She has been a dedicated member of St Edward the Confessor Church in Romford for over 60 years, forming strong friendships and connections through regular services and community events.
Settling In and Building Confidence
Like many residents, June initially took some time to adjust to her new surroundings and come out of her shell. However, with support from the activities team, she has gradually grown in confidence and now enjoys building friendships with other residents.

Gardening has remained at the centre of her daily life. She continues to care for her own flowers while also taking part in group gardening activities within the home. Her family remain closely involved, with her two daughters and son regularly supporting her at events and activities, helping her feel connected and reassured.
Alongside gardening, June enjoys outings and quieter activities such as knitting, giving her a balance of social engagement and personal time.
Staying Connected to What Matters
Maintaining her faith has continued to play a key role in June’s well-being. Her long-standing connection to her church remains an important part of her identity, providing comfort, familiarity and a sense of belonging.
With encouragement from the team, June has also become more confident in joining outings into the local community, including trips to garden centres and theatre visits. These experiences have helped her feel more socially engaged and open to trying new things.
A Renewed Sense of Purpose
June now plays an active role within the home’s gardening activities. The wellbeing team regularly involves her in planning flower planting sessions, often asking for her advice on which plants to choose for the garden displays.
This recognition of her knowledge and passion has helped strengthen her sense of purpose. She takes pride in seeing the finished displays flourish and enjoys sharing her experience with others.
Her confidence has noticeably improved, and she continues to feel valued and involved in daily life at the home.
