Sunshine, Smiles and Special Visitors: Alpaca Experience at Willows Care Home

Residents, families and staff at Willows Care Home in Romford came together for a truly memorable and uplifting afternoon, as the home welcomed some very special four-legged visitors into its garden.
The carefully organised event, led by the home’s dedicated Wellbeing Team, transformed the outdoor space into a lively and engaging setting where residents could enjoy close encounters with alpacas Peggy and Percy, Crunchie the guinea pig, and Romeo the small goat.

The visit was designed to promote emotional well-being and create meaningful experiences for residents, many of whom relish opportunities to connect with animals. Known for their calming and therapeutic benefits, animal interactions can help reduce anxiety, spark memories and encourage social engagement; something clearly evident throughout the afternoon.

Residents were encouraged to stroke, feed and spend time with the animals, many forming instant bonds. The gentle and friendly nature of the visiting animals ensured that everyone, regardless of mobility or confidence levels, could comfortably take part.

Families were also invited to join the experience, making it a truly inclusive event that brought generations together. Loved ones shared in the special moments, helping to create lasting memories.

Residents were quick to express their delight. Resident Pat Quigley, age 74 smiled as she said, “I love them, I love all animals. This is a really special afternoon.” while Ivy Dooley, age 93 described the experience as simply “amazing.” Throughout the afternoon, spontaneous moments of joy could be heard across the garden, with comments such as “Someone’s made a new best friend!” and laughter as the cheeky goat Romeo attempted to steal the spotlight.

Families also praised the initiative, describing it as a “great interaction activity” and highlighting how valuable it was to take part in such an engaging and inclusive event alongside their loved ones.

Claudia Ramsamy, The Home Manager added:

“It was wonderful to see our residents, their families and our team sharing such special moments together. Events like this are so important in supporting emotional wellbeing and creating meaningful daily experiences. The joy on everyone’s faces said it all. We are always looking for ways to bring new and enriching experiences into the home, and this was a perfect example of how something simple can have such a powerful impact.”

Animal visits continue to be a valued part of life at Willows Care Home, offering not only entertainment but also therapeutic benefits. The calm and friendly presence of the animals helped create a soothing environment where residents could relax, engage and enjoy the moment.
