We were delighted that the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) came to Willows recently to interview staff for a social media video to kick off a national consultation around careers in care.
The video, which is airing on Twitter as well as the DHSC’s other social media channels, invites people working in social care to share their views about their careers to help shape future opportunities for care workers. It forms part of the Next Steps to Put People at the Heart of Care announced this week, which commits to further digitising the social care sector and strengthening the workforce so as to provide care to all those who need it. Plans include building a new career pathway, increasing opportunities for career progression and launching a new care certificate qualification.
The social media team, which had visited the home with Sajid Javid, the then Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in February 2022, were keen to return to Willows and film staff for the video. Home manager Claudia Ramsamy and her team were not going to pass up such a golden opportunity to air their views on camera! As well as Claudia, trainee assistant practitioner Sarah Williams and staff in a variety of roles across the home were interviewed on camera about their individual career paths, benefits, training opportunities and experiences of working in care as well as their hopes for the future.
“We’re not camera shy here at Willows,” says Claudia. “We’ve got a lot to say about care as a career, its benefits and challenges. My staff are talented, dedicated and hardworking. Care is by no means an easy option as a career, but they are without exception incredibly positive about working in care.”
She adds: “It’s a real honour for us to have played even a small part in shifting people’s perception of care towards being a viable, long-term career with significant opportunities and benefits.”
