It may still be a couple of weeks until the Alzheimer’s Society’s famous Cupcake Day on 13 June but today it is the turn of Willows Care Home. Staff at the Romford-based home have baked cakes in various flavours and colours as a surprise for several local care homes and others in a gesture of support and solidarity.

The tasty treats were delivered this morning in colourful hand-made cupcake boxes decorated with butterflies, a favourite emblem at Willows, and inscribed with messages of hope. The lucky recipients were Barleycroft Care Home and Gable Court in Romford, Chestnut Court and Park View Care Home in Dagenham, Upminster’s Derham House Care Home and the Acorn Centre, a nearby children’s specialist health centre.

Home Manager Claudia Ramsamy, who delivered the cakes, says: “This is all about showing our love and support to the other homes at this very difficult time. Just like care homes all over the UK, they are doing an amazing and valuable job and, as far as we’re concerned, we’re all in this together. It’s about giving thanks, too – we’re just so incredibly grateful that we are COVID-19 free.”

She also paid tribute to The Acorn Centre. “Staff there have brought us regular gifts of sandwiches over the last few weeks. Their support has really helped to keep us going!” she adds.
